The Paris Marathon 2010 Travel Deals
The Paris Marathon is one of the most exciting annual events in Paris. Apart from the fact that the race is almost always an exciting affair, what you will enjoy really are the other features of the race. For instance, among the attractions of this event are the food and drink stations on the route. The annual Paris Marathon begins at the top of the Champs Elysees and finishes at the bottom of Avenue Foch.
The Paris Marathon has a long history behind it. The first Paris Marathon took place in 1896. A big crowd gathered to watch 191 participants. It was run over the 40 km separating Paris from Conflans and the organizers decided to award a commemorative medal to all runners who finished the race in less than 4 hours. The current distance of the race is 42.195 km - the standard Olympic Marathon length. This first race was won by Len Hurst from England, who crossed the finishing line in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 30 seconds. His prize money was 200 francs. The early races were relatively low key affairs in contrast to today's marathons which attract huge crowds of up to 35,000 runners. For two and a half days around the marathon, the Porte de Versailles showground puts on a free exhibition and fair, with all kinds of sportswear on sale and demonstrations of sports equipment. A pasta party for runners is also held here on the Saturday afternoon before the race. Throughout the marathon runners get a good view of the magnificent city and some of its famous sights. The course starts out right in front of the Triumphal Arch and continues down the broad Champs Elysées. The route passes through two Parisian woods and past fabulous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and Place de la Bastille. A large part of the course runs along the banks of the calmly flowing Seine River providing pleasing scenery and ensuring flat streets at the same time. The wide avenues at the start prevent overcrowding, and the overall flatness of the course makes it fairly fast. PB setting is definitely an option.
This year the Paris Marathon will be held on April 11th, 2010 - 8:45 a.m on the Champs Elysées. Total distance covered will be 42,195 km in the City of Paris from the Champs Élysées Avenue to Foch Avenue running through Bastille, Nation, Vincennes and les Tuileries.
